AET Week 4 Jump Start

For the Leadership Analysis project I will be looking at the leadership styles of Captain Malcolm Reynolds from the TV show Firefly. He is a fiercely loyal outlaw. His loyalty is hard to earn but once it is gained he will be at your side to the end. No fight is too big if he believes in the side he is fighting for. He has no problem working outside the boundaries of the law because he believes the government is a blind corporation that has no interest in the welfare of its people.

Captain Reynolds has a very diverse group of personalities and relationships in his “crew”. For the most part the crew has a say in the types of jobs they take and how the jobs are executed. When times are tough (and they often are) he is more authoritative when it comes to making the hard choices. If a job is too good to pass up, but it gets close to crossing ethical boundaries he will make the decisions to save the consciences of those under his command.

When possible Captain Reynolds uses a Participative leadership style. The use of this style ensures the strongest comfort level for the others. In their line of work feeling like an active participant in the planning phase guarantees full focus and contribution. When in a tough situation he will transition to a more Authoritarian style to ensure swift decisions.

AET Week 4 Peer Review

Joe Tatulli’s Stuff ™ Vacations have a very attractive poster. The contrasting adventure types appeal to a wide range of vacation styles. I think it works on a behavioral design level, the images of desirable destinations and people having fun inspires the “must have” feelings.

Reflect – The poster does make me want to travel. I like the idea of combining multiple images to attract many audiences. The application of multiple fonts looks nice. It is a practice that I need to work on and would like to use in my advertisement. The contrast of the images is well laid out. The barren, vibrant desert against the busy dark city and the exciting white water rafting against the calm, relaxing beach scene makes for great counter points.

Inquire – What is the name of the product? Is the Stuff Vacations or Vacation America? Or is Stuff the name of the travel package? The name could be a little clearer. I like the slogan of “Stuff everyone needs” but it leaves the question of what Stuff ™ refers to. What was the reason for the choice of colors for the “Stuff” background? It seems a little out of place. Using colors from the images might make it blend better. The dark blue of the water and raft would be a good start.

Suggest – Maybe instead of the Tourism Council info at the bottom you could explain the Stuff product more. Something like “Vacation America presents: Stuff travel packages” would give a more direct elusion to what Stuff is.

Elevate – The images are beautiful and each one could be its own story. You could expand this project into a line of posters. You could make each image its own poster with a tag line that leads into the next. Then use this poster as the final piece of the line. I know that goes beyond the scope of this project but this poster has the feel of a final portion.

AET Week 3 Exploration

I picked Scott Pilgrim vs The World. It is a fun movie with good action and lots of humor. The color palette for this poster is monochromatic red with a splash of green.

The primary colors of this palette are in sync with the comic book feel of the movie. The use of all three primary colors is Triadic. The use of blue jeans and green shirt give the subject a stark contrast with the shades of red background. This contrast makes the subject pop in the center of the image.

The strong primary colors also create the mood of a very action charged movie with a silly side, similar to the circus, which also traditionally uses contrasting primary colors.

AET Week 1 Exploration

"Bauble"

Visceral Design

This one struck a cord with me. The image is dark and the more you look at it the more disturbing it is. The reference to the holidays with the ornament makes it hit home.

"Renault"

Behavioral Design

This on might not be practical but it does drive at the easy of use, innovation, and gives a must have quality. It looks like fun and makes me feel like if I have it i can get where i need to go faster.

"Mira Girl"

Reflective Design

This one is playing to the sentimental and personal level. The rational of wanting every one to connect at some level with another makes this work. It also touches on a long term benefit of two lives being improved by the connection.

WK4 Peer Review

Reflect – I definitely understand the logistical nightmare that comes with juggling family work and school. The concept of not knowing what degree plan you really want to focus on has been a fight I faced as well. There were some clever picture/ voice over unions. I like the picture of the digging dog going along with the voice over of “I had to dig a little deeper”. I am also intrigued by the idea of tying in a day at the amusement park with a class assignment. It makes me want to take another at my own story and iron out the kinks in my audio, and add some movement to my images.

Inquire – With your goal of a Bachelors Degree and you desire to write music what field are you looking at with this degree? Was your goal specifically to get the Degree or is the degree a stepping stone to a career goal.

Suggest – I like the execution of the music in the background. It is the right level and adds an emotional tone to the overall video. Have you considered trying a different emotional tone? Your video covers some hard times and difficult situations that the music fits, but you seem to also have some comedic images and phrases. The mention of a puppy child and salt water tank full of fish makes me laugh. A more light hearted musical background could lighten up the feel of the video.

Elevate – You might be able to expand you digital story to include what got you interested in song writing and what you did to fuel you interest in it between high school and starting at Full Sail. It would also be good to hear how you plan to use the Media Communications degree to make a career in the music field or if you desired field has change you could expand on that.

I would like to say that overall I was very impressed with this project. I felt the voice over was well rehearsed and even throughout the narration. The photos went well with the story and added a great emotional support. I liked the technique of the photos slightly moving, that is something I would like to use on my next project.
