For the Leadership Analysis project I will be looking at the
leadership styles of Captain Malcolm Reynolds from the TV show Firefly. He is a
fiercely loyal outlaw. His loyalty is hard to earn but once it is gained he
will be at your side to the end. No fight is too big if he believes in the side
he is fighting for. He has no problem working outside the boundaries of the law
because he believes the government is a blind corporation that has no interest
in the welfare of its people.
Captain Reynolds has a very diverse group of personalities
and relationships in his “crew”. For the most part the crew has a say in the
types of jobs they take and how the jobs are executed. When times are tough
(and they often are) he is more authoritative when it comes to making the hard
choices. If a job is too good to pass up, but it gets close to crossing ethical
boundaries he will make the decisions to save the consciences of those under
his command.
When possible Captain Reynolds uses a Participative
leadership style. The use of this style ensures the strongest comfort level for
the others. In their line of work feeling like an active participant in the
planning phase guarantees full focus and contribution. When in a tough
situation he will transition to a more Authoritarian style to ensure swift
decisions.
