WK1 Analysis: Nailing Down Transmedia

Post Number 42...

From the strict definition of the terms Cross Media and Transmedia the word sound interchangeable, but there does seem to be a big difference. Both forms of storytelling utilize multiple media avenues to deliver content. The difference is in how what is done with the content by the audience. Cross media is mostly meant to be absorbed. There is some interaction but it is limited and still follows a hard scripted story line. Transmedia stories are added to by the participants. It gives opportunity for the audience to get involved in the outcome and create their part in the evolution of the story.
A cross media Although I really don't know what I'm doing it is a bit of fun! Check out Billy Gruff on FaceBook. story that I follow is in the Television show castle. In the show the main character is a write that follows around a NYPD detective as inspiration for is new set of mystery novels. At the end of each season there is a mystery novel released by Richard Castle (the fictional writer). They have also released a couple of graphic novels about Richard Castle’s first character Derick Storm. The comic books were mentioned in the TV show and then released in the real world. It was an interesting way for fans of the show to get more content and feel closer to the characters.
The transmedia example that I have some firsthand knowledge of is Letter Boxing. It is a worldwide game where people hide a blank book and a stamp, then post clues on where it is hidden. Other players will seek the book with their own unique stamp and book. When they find the hidden book they mark it with the stamp they brought and mark their book with the hidden stamp. There are web sites and blogs with clues, tips and tricks on where to look, how difficult a hunt is and how many hunts are in an area. I l chose this transmedia story because it spans the globe and has been going for some time now and continues to grow.
When I was looking through ARGNet and learning about Alternate reality Gaming I saw a name I recognized. I listen to Zombies!Run when I run. It is a fun app that tells you a story with you as a character. The “narrator” is usually a character as well and they guide you through a zombie invasion. All you need to do as the player is listening and keep running. The purpose of the game is to motivate and entertain the runner. There are a lot of zombie related Alternate Reality Games popping up recently. The zombie 5k “survival” runs that now travels the country is one that I have been looking forward to. This one again promotes running and social fitness, but has a horror and survivalist themes to go along with it. Participants can sign up to start off as zombies or living. The zombie spots usually sell out pretty quick.
